Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) another game changer for agribusiness?

About Andrew Baker

Andrew Baker is a professional ecologist with over 30 years of consultancy experience. He originally trained as a botanist but has long taken a keen interest in the development and practical application of nature conservation law. His work is wide ranging from large scale housing protects, to renewable energy (solar, wind and hydro), nuclear power, large scale infrastructure projects (roads, airports and sea ports) and general land management (woodlands, rivers, moorlands, etc.). He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) and a highly experienced expert witness on ecological matters. He is the managing director of Baker Consultants Ltd a highly respected UK based ecological consultancy and employs a team of expert ecologists.

At a time of immense change for agriculture, the Environment Bill is soon to gain royal assent and hidden within its depths is the requirement for most developments to deliver 10% net gain for biodiversity (BNG). The introduction of the BNG requirement will have far reaching consequences for farming, house building, infrastructure development and possibly land prices. The big question is who will win and who will lose?
