Beyond the country house – discover the potential of your property

The commercial value of a country house does not end at the front door. The truth is that there is often a world of commercial opportunity sitting beyond the walls and windows of the house. Outdoor events, holiday cottages, glamping, filming and weddings in marquees or converted outbuildings are just some of the options available to you.

Identifying the commerciality of your property can be difficult. That’s why many seek the advice of those who have successfully adopted other revenue streams into their business model.

One of those regularly asked for advice is Simon Foster, who in 1994 became General Manager of Eastnor Castle in Herefordshire, where he developed a successful and widely respected historic house business, promoting the castle as a popular visitor attraction and venue for weddings and corporate events.

He was instrumental in building a public events programme in the castle and park and encouraging the organisers of The Big Chill music festival to move their event to Eastnor in 2003, where it grew from a 5,000 to 40,000 ticket event. 

His experience led him to adopt a new Commercial Heritage department with Savills and talk about the commercial potential of country houses at events across the country.
